We believe that the key to protecting biodiversity lies with the communities who live alongside them. In collaboration with the Division Forest Office Humla and local including Rural Municipalities, Community Forests, Youth Clubs, and Citizen Scientists combat threats to wildlife and biodiversity through unified action.
Our efforts focus on reducing illegal activities such as poaching, snaring, wildlife trade, and forest fires while addressing habitat destruction and emerging challenges like retaliatory killings. We conduct regular patrols, monitor sensitive areas, and report violations through extensive community networks. Additionally, we incorporate legal sensitization programs and deploy advanced surveillance technologies, such as Camera, and UAVs, to strengthen conservation enforcement. Beyond enforcement, we prioritize habitat restoration through reforestation, mitigating threats to vulnerable species, and rescuing wildlife in distress. These actions ensure that critical ecosystems remain intact and resilient, providing safe refuges and thriving habitats for wildlife.
UKALI is a community-driven model, focusing on the Upper Karnali Landscape as a learning ground and field campus. Guided by the philosophy of “Leading by Locals,” the initiative ensures that conservation efforts are community-led and grounded in the cultural heritage and values of the landscapes it serves. With the broader vision of developing a replicable approach for other mountain regions in Nepal and beyond, UKALI strengthens local institutions, nurtures conservation leaders, and enhances the capacity of communities to actively participate in and benefit from conservation initiatives.
